Philip Seymour Hoffman knows what he wants. Thankfully, the transfer handles most of the challenges quite well, with only a few minor problems here and there. High contrast, severe grain, and very dark scenes. The Video Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, 25th Hour features many things that could be the death of a transfer. With its fantastic cast and solid story, it can't come more recommended. 25th Hour is an excellent character drama set in the real world, not some imaginary New York. Just as life in New York goes on, even with the big scar they were looking upon. There's a great scene where Pepper and Philip Seymour Hoffman are talking with Ground Zero in the background, and as they talk about how life will go on after Monty goes to prison. If you want a funny caption here, you won't be getting one. The film's credits even end by running the names of FDNY Rescue 5. Barry Pepper's character lives in an apartment that looks over Ground Zero, and throughout the film you see memorials. The film begins with extremely powerful opening credits that use the Tower Light Memorial as a backdrop with Terence Blanchard's soaring score setting the tone for the film. It's not a 9/11 movie, but it's set in the New York that exists after the tragedy. It was hit hard, and 25th Hour is filled with 9/11 imagery. Only the New York of today is different than the New York in his previous films. As with most of Spike Lee's movies, 25th Hour is set in New York and tells a story involving very realistic characters living in the metropolis. For example, Philip Seymour Hoffman's character is a schoolteacher seriously tempted by a seventeen-year-old student (Anna Paquin). Each one is realistic, with their specific flaws. Here, each character is interesting, and their interactions with each other drive the film and keep you engrossed. If a character-driven movie has characters that aren't interesting all is lost. That's the film, and thanks to the excellent cast playing believable characters it works so well. Monty tries to reconnect with his father (Brian Cox), while heading out for one last night on the town with his childhood friends Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Slaughtery (Barry Pepper) and his girlfriend Naturelle (Rosario Dawson). The Movie 25th Hour is about Monty Brogan (Edward Norton), a guy who's lived his entire life in New York, and due to one mistake he's facing seven years behind bars and has one 24 hour period of freedom left. It didn't disappoint and also includes a surprisingly good Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, especially considering how the film is a character, and dialog, driven story. With two commentary tracks and deleted scenes, I was looking forward to this disc.
